How To Plan For Unpredictable Late Spring Weather On Your Wedding Day

Here’s the thing about late spring weddings in the Midwest: they’re gorgeous… and can be unpredictable when it comes to weather. One minute you’re basking in golden sunshine, and the next, you’re watching storm clouds roll in over your venue. I’ve had many an April Shower wedding.

And while I wish I could promise perfect weather to every couple, the next best thing is being prepared for whatever the sky decides to throw your way so that if you do have a case of good luck rain–you are ready for it.

One of the best ways to plan ahead? Choose a venue that offers beautiful indoor and outdoor options. As a photographer, I always look for natural light, bright walls, and open spaces when scouting indoor alternatives. Bonus points if your venue has a covered porch or patio — it gives us that dreamy outdoor feel without the soggy shoes. When you are selecting the spot you’ll say I Do, make sure there are a few spacious options without busy walls or furniture so that in the event of rain, we have a great spot to take those family photos.

A few of my favorite St. Louis venues handle unpredictable weather beautifully: The Dogwood, Silver Oaks, and The Ritz Carlton all have lovely indoor ceremony and photo locations that don’t compromise on aesthetics or light.

Another tip? Build flexibility into your timeline. If I see a storm rolling in on your wedding day, I’ll pivot your photo schedule to sneak in outdoor portraits before it hits — or we’ll take a break until it passes. With the right team (and a solid planner!), a little weather won’t throw us off track. We can adjust that itinerary to make the most of whatever we get.

Remember to always come prepared. Clear umbrellas are my best friend — they photograph beautifully and keep you dry without hiding your face. If you see any possibility of rain: pack a few clear umbrellas, so you and your wedding party stay covered without sacrificing style.

And when it comes to your dress? Don’t stress. A little dampness on the hem never ruined a celebration — and honestly, those twirling-in-the-rain photos are often some of my favorites. The day will be what you make it, and I aim to make it as low-stress as possible.

At the end of the day, here’s what I want you to know: unpredictable weather doesn’t have to mean unpredictable photos. With the right mindset, a solid team, and a little pre-planning, your wedding will be just as magical — rain or shine.

So bring the umbrella. Wear the waterproof mascara. And know that I’ve got you covered, literally and creatively.
