5 Things Couples Tend to Forget When They're Planning a Wedding
When you’ve been on the wedding photography scene as much as I have, here are some things I can tell you: it’s always the little things that sneak up on you. The truth is, planning a wedding is no small feat, and while your checklist probably includes the dress, the DJ, and the flowers, there are a few key details that couples often overlook. Let’s talk about the top five I see most often!
1. Not Accounting for Sunset in the Timeline
Lighting is everything in photography, and the time of your ceremony directly impacts the look and feel of your portraits. Especially in late fall or early spring, when sunset hits earlier than you think, not doing a first look or having an evening ceremony can mean no natural light for couple photos. Talk to your planner and your photographer (hi, that’s me!) when setting your timeline — we can help you get those dreamy golden hour portraits.
2. Skipping a Planner or Coordinator
I can’t say this enough: a good planner or day-of coordinator is worth it. When you have someone keeping the day on track and handling the logistics, I get to focus fully on capturing the magic. Without a planner, I often find myself helping solve problems that pull me away from the lens — and while I don’t mind stepping in, I want to be giving you my full attention as your photographer.
3. Forgetting the Importance of the Getting Ready Space
This one is a sneaky detail! The space you get ready in sets the tone for your photos. Look for a room with big windows, light walls, and plenty of space for your crew. I promise — those first-look mirror moments, robe shots, and final touches all look 10x better in bright, clutter-free spaces.
4. Not Thinking About the Flow of the Day
You don’t need a minute-by-minute schedule, but understanding how long things take (like family portraits, travel between venues, or bustling a gown) will help reduce stress. We’ll work together to create a photography timeline that supports the day you’re dreaming of — calm, joyful, and well-paced.
5. Assuming Everyone Is On the Same Page
Spoiler: they’re probably not. Family, friends, vendors — everyone brings their own expectations. Communicating clearly, especially when it comes to timing, roles, and must-have moments, will make your day go so much smoother. Trust your team, and lean on us — we’re here to help it all come together.
At the end of the day, your wedding isn’t just about beautiful photos (though you’ll definitely have those!). It’s about a beautiful experience. And thoughtful planning — with help from the right people — makes all the difference.
