Behind the Lens: A Day in the Life on a Wedding Day

You’ve seen the dreamy galleries and the just-married joy—but have you ever wondered what the day looks like from the photographer’s side of the lens?

Here’s a peek at what a wedding day really looks like for me—coffee in hand, memory cards ready, timeline loaded, and heart fully in it. A lot goes into making sure every moment is captured with care, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything.

Morning Routine

Wedding days usually start early. I spend the morning with my family—sharing breakfast, checking the weather, and getting centered before a long but joyful day ahead.

  • Fuel first: high-protein breakfast, hydration, and always coffee

  • Double-check my notes: timeline, weather, key details

  • Sync the plan: confirm with planner and/or second shooter if needed

  • Gear up: load timeline to my Apple Watch, check batteries and backups one last time

  • Pack up: camera bags, styling kit, weather tools (fans, hothands, umbrellas), and a cooler with drinks/snacks

On the Road

I always aim to arrive at the venue about 30 minutes early—just in case. (Pro tip: I fuel up and wash my car the day before so I’m not scrambling that morning.)

Once I arrive:

  • I scout the lighting and best photo spots (especially if it’s my first time there)

  • I connect with the planner or lead vendor

  • I get right to work styling and shooting details—invitations, jewelry, shoes, florals, heirlooms

The Wedding Day Flow

Every wedding is different—but here’s what usually fills my memory cards:

  • Getting ready moments with the couple + their people

  • First look or first touch

  • Ceremony setup and venue details

  • The ceremony itself (including those can't-miss reactions!)

  • Portraits: family, wedding party, and couple

  • Reception room before guests arrive

  • Grand entrances, toasts, cake, and dancing

  • Golden hour portraits if we sneak them in

Throughout the day, I’m balancing direction with observation—sometimes leading, sometimes blending in. My goal? To capture the real moments while keeping the couple relaxed, supported, and fully present.

The Wind-Down

After the last dance (and usually after I’ve changed my shoes), I head home with a full heart and a gallery of memories that I can't wait to share with you.

  • I call my husband and gush about the day while he updates me on life with our girls

  • I start backing up images immediately so they’re safe

  • I shower, stretch, and finally wind down

  • Within a day or two, I start curating a sneak peek gallery

Why It’s Worth It

Being a wedding photographer is more than just showing up and snapping photos—it’s preparation, stamina, flexibility, and heart. Every detail, every timeline tweak, every change in lighting... it’s all worth it to deliver a gallery full of joy, love, and lasting memories.
