What to Wear for Your Spring Engagement Session

Let’s talk about what to wear for your spring engagement session—because yes, it does matter. The right outfit helps you feel confident, complements your location, and allows your personality as a couple to shine through. And as your photographer, I want you to love your images for years to come.

Here’s what I always recommend when helping my couples get photo-ready in the spring:

1. Choose Light & Airy Neutrals (or Soft Spring Tones)

Spring is the season of renewal—so think light, breezy colors. Soft pastels, earth tones, and neutrals always photograph beautifully. I love blush, dusty blue, ivory, sage, and warm taupe tones for this time of year.

Avoid loud prints or neons that might clash with your environment (or each other!).

2. Dress for the Weather, but Layer Smart

Spring in St. Louis can mean 65 and sunny… or 45 and windy. I always recommend layers! A cute denim or linen jacket, a shawl, or even a well-cut coat can add texture to your outfit and keep you comfortable without sacrificing style.

3. Go Dressy—You Won’t Regret It

You only get one engagement session! This is your chance to feel a little extra. Long, flowy dresses look stunning in motion (and photograph beautifully in open outdoor spaces). For grooms, a blazer or sport coat goes a long way in elevating the feel.

You can absolutely bring a more casual option, too—we can always do an outfit change partway through!

4. Coordinate, Don’t Match

The goal is to complement each other, not to show up in identical outfits. Think: a dress that ties in a subtle shade from his shirt, or two looks that feel like part of the same seasonal color story.

5. Be You—Elevated

If you’re not a dress girl, wear something you love. If you hate stiff collars, go with a more relaxed button-down. Just aim for a slightly polished version of your favorite style. You should feel like yourselves—just extra photo-ready.

Final Thoughts

At the end of the day, what matters most is that you feel comfortable and connected. Your engagement session is about your relationship, your story, and your joy—your outfits should support that, not distract from it.
