What Is A Flatlay - And Should You Request It?

If you’ve spent any time browsing wedding photography blogs or Pinterest boards, chances are you’ve seen a flat lay photo, even if you didn’t know that’s what it was called. So let’s talk about it: what exactly is a flat lay, why does it matter, and is it something you should request from your wedding photographer?

What Is a Flat Lay?

A flat lay is a carefully styled, top-down photo that features curated wedding details, things like your invitation suite, vow books, rings, shoes, jewelry, cufflinks, and more. It’s a visual way to document the design elements you’ve chosen with intention, often laid out on a styling board or textured surface.

But a flat lay is more than just a pretty picture. It’s a way to preserve the details that set the tone for your entire day, so you don’t forget your something borrowed, blue, old and new.

Are Flat Lays Still Relevant?

Lately, there’s been chatter in the wedding world that “flat lays are dead.” I completely disagree.

Your invitation suite is often your guests’ very first impression of your wedding style, and chances are, you poured time, energy, and budget into making it beautiful. The same goes for meaningful jewelry, heirloom rings, or custom shoes. These items deserve their moment.

The key is how flat lays are done. Gone are the days of cramming every object into one cluttered photo. Instead, I style your details in a way that makes sense, like separating paper goods from wearable items, and giving each element its own space to shine. For example:

  • One flat lay might feature your invitation suite, envelope, and wax seal.

  • Another might spotlight your rings with soft florals and a linen ring box.

  • Your shoes? Photographed solo in great light so they get the moment they deserve.

These individual detail photos also look amazing in wedding albums, giving balance and breathing room to your story.

Flat Lays vs. Candid Detail Photos

While flat lays are beautiful and intentional, some details are best captured in context. A menu card feels more authentic when photographed at a place setting. A signature cocktail? Better in someone’s hand at the bar. It’s all about balance. Flat lays create a visual anchor for your day, while in-the-moment shots bring your story to life.

When Do We Shoot Flat Lays?

Depending on your timeline, I have a few ways to make sure your flat lays are captured without sacrificing real moments:

  • Arriving early to get detail shots before things kick off

  • Having my second photographer document getting ready while I focus on styling

  • Capturing flat lays the day before or after the wedding if time is tight

No matter the plan, I’ll make sure your wedding day details are thoughtfully and beautifully preserved.

Final Thoughts

Flat lays aren’t going anywhere, at least not in my world. When done with purpose and intention, they elevate your gallery and give the design of your day the spotlight it deserves. So yes: go ahead and gather your details, and let’s make some flat lay magic together.
