How I Keep Wedding Portraits Comfortable in the Summer Heat
Let’s be honest: summer weddings in the Midwest are beautiful—but they can also be hot. And when it’s 90+ degrees with a side of humidity, the last thing anyone wants is to feel uncomfortable during portraits.
As a photographer who shoots weddings all summer long, my job isn’t just to capture the moments—it’s also to make sure you feel good in them. Here’s how I keep things comfortable, efficient, and relaxed (no matter how high the temps climb).
1. We Stick to the Shade
Direct sunlight can be harsh, unflattering, and exhausting. I always scout shaded areas ahead of time—trees, side patios, covered porches—so you’re never standing in full sun longer than necessary. Shade gives us softer light and cooler temps.
2. We Move Efficiently
I’m not here to drag out the process or keep you in a lineup of posed shots for an hour. I come into wedding days with a solid shot list and clear plan so we can move through your portraits quickly and intentionally—without sacrificing variety or beauty.
3. Breaks Are Built In
If it’s hot out, I’ll naturally rotate people in and out of portraits so no one’s standing in the heat longer than they need to. If we have access to an air-conditioned space or transportation with AC, I’ll always offer quick breaks between photo blocks so your wedding party and family can reset and regroup.
4. Water Is Always Nearby
I remind couples and wedding parties to bring cold water to their portrait locations, because it makes a big difference—especially for afternoon outdoor ceremonies or photo sessions between events.
5. We Read the Room (and the Weather)
Some summer days are hotter than others. If the heat index is climbing fast or a storm is rolling in, I’ll adjust the timeline or swap photo locations to make the most of what we’ve got. Your comfort always comes first—and we can still create magic with a little flexibility.
Final Thoughts
Your wedding portraits shouldn’t feel like a chore—even in the summer heat. With the right planning, a little shade, and plenty of water, we’ll keep things cool, comfortable, and beautifully true to your day.
